Belgian waffles are known for their light, crispy texture and delicious taste. But have you ever tried a Liege waffle? These decadent treats originated in the Belgian city of Liege and are made with a sweet, dough-like batter that is studded with pearl sugar for a crunchy, caramelized texture. But what really takes Liege waffles to the next level is the luxurious toppings that can be added to create a truly indulgent meal.
At the heart of any good Liege waffle is the dough. Made with flour, eggs and butter, the dough is mixed and allowed to rise before being blended with pearl sugar. The pearl sugar creates small pockets of caramelized sweetness throughout the waffle, giving it a unique texture and flavor. The dough is then pressed onto a hot waffle iron to create the signature shape and crispy exterior of a Liege waffle.
While traditional toppings like whipped cream and strawberries are always a good choice, why not indulge in something truly luxurious? For a truly decadent treat, try topping your Liege waffle with chocolate ganache, caramel sauce, or fresh fruit compote.
And for those who enjoy savory-sweet flavor combinations, the waffle can be topped with bacon or prosciutto and drizzled with maple syrup.
Liege waffles are the perfect canvas for a range of indulgent toppings, making them a popular meal. Whether you’re in the mood for something sweet or savory, there’s no denying the appeal of a hot and crispy Liege waffle topped with delicious ingredients.
Liege waffles are a perfect choice for those who love something sweet and crispy. So why not treat yourself to a fresh Liege waffle topped with your favorite ingredients and indulge in a little decadence?
Liege Waffle Recipe
Ingredients:
- 3/4 cup warm milk
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 10 tablespoons butter, softened
- 1 cup pearl sugar (or make your own by combining 1 cup granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon water and microwaving for 30 seconds)
Directions:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the warm milk, yeast and 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, vanilla and remaining 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Add the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
- Gradually add the flour and salt, stirring with a wooden spoon until a sticky dough forms. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for a few minutes, adding more flour if needed, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and knead in the pearl sugar. Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces and shape them into balls. Place them on a baking sheet and cover with a damp cloth. Let them rest for another 15 minutes.
- Preheat your waffle iron and lightly grease it. Cook one ball of dough at a time, pressing it down slightly to fit the iron. Cook for about 4 minutes, or until golden and crisp on both sides. Be careful as the sugar will caramelize and become very hot.
- Transfer the waffles to a wire rack and let them cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with your favorite toppings, such as whipped cream, berries, chocolate sauce or powdered sugar.
